Question: Im planning to e-mail a professor who is teaching a MATH151 course (Calculus II) and the advisors at SDSU told me that I need a letter from the professor and the dept. undergrad advisor. The question is, how should I start writing an email to a professor for retaking the course for the third time? Any sample letters will be appreciated. Thanks!

Dear Professor Smith, I'm writing to ask you to support my request to take one of your sections of Calculus II for the fourth time in Spring 2012. My advisor, Name, says that I need letters from you and from the department undergraduate advisor in order to enroll. I have already taken Calculus II from Professor's Jones, Smith-Jones, and Jones-Smith, and I earned an F, a D, and an F, respectively. I believe that the reasons I did so poorly were that I did not spend enough time studying, that I did not ask for help for a long time after I realized that I needed it, and, in Professor Jones-Smith's class, I left town for Thanksgiving Break early, assuming that I could just make up the midterm when I got back, but I was wrong. This time, I plan to change my approach in the following ways: (1) I will spend 90 minutes a day, 7 days a week, studying Calculus II. It will be built into my schedule the same way that meals are. (2) I will read the chapters before the classes in which they are discussed. If I have questions, I will ask them in class. If I still don't understand something after class is over, I will go to the Math Center or to your office hours ASAP to ask again and then, if necessary, to the other one of those two. If I still don't understand something after that, I will hire a tutor and pay him or her out of my own money until I understand everything. (3) I will read the syllabus very carefully, and before I miss a class session, miss a test, or fail to turn in homework on time I will get out the syllabus and make sure I understand the policy that affects me. I understand that it is better to take an exam when I am unprepared than to never take it at all, and that it is important to do my homework well in advance in case something happens and I don't have time at the last minute. If you are willing to write me a letter, could you please let me know when I can pick it up. If you would like to talk to me in more detail about why I don't think it would just be a waste of your time to have me in your class, I will be getting back into town on January 5th, and could meet with you any time on the 6th, on the morning of the 9th, or on the afternoon of the 10th.
