It's a TIME, SPEED, DISTANCE problem.. so you just need to know the SPEED of the 4th century boat.. the distance and you can work out the answer.

Your piercing is old enough and healed ( ear lobe piercing fully heal in 2-3 months ) so I doubt that what you've got is an infection. It's most likely an allergic reactions from bad jewelry material. How to know if a piercing is infected : If yellow or green fluids or pus is coming out. White and clear discharge is normal. But bad jewelry material can also cause all those symptoms and it's most of the times mistaken to an infection. Proper jewelry material : Titanium, stainless steel, 18K and above gold. If there is an infection ( which again I doubt ) you should never ever remove the jewelry and let a piercing close up or heal. If you do the infection will get trapped inside with no way out and from there can move further into the body causing real trouble and threaten your general health. If you remove the jewelry the infection won't magically go away because the jewelry does cause infections but bacteria are. In order to clear an infection the wound aka piercing has to stay open and the jewelry has to stay there for that purpose. Do sea salt soaks twice a day until the piercing settles and make sure you have the proper jewelry material in. This will treat/avoid infections and help the piercing to heal. Warm water (8oz) + non iodized salt (1/4 teaspoon) mixed in a cup. Soak the piercing in for 10 minutes, 2 times a day. Use a q-tip to clean around the piercing thoroughly, rinse with water and pat it dry with a paper towel. Non iodized salt is cheap and easy to find. Also the best way to clean a piercing and treat infections or irritation or allergies from bad jewelry material. Never ever use alcohol, peroxide, or anything that harsh on a piercing. They will irritate the piercing even more, take away all the good bacteria that are needed for the healing and this will definitely lead to an infection. p.s. Even sterling silver earrings can cause all the above because they contain 92.5% silver and 7.5% of other metals. In those other metals there is usually nickel which is the one that causes all this mess. -------------- Infections do not magically heal on their own as the piercing is closing up. Do not listen to what everyone with no experience is saying online and simply go and see a professional piercer at a professional piercing studio to confirm all the above.

If you have an ear infection, the wound will naturally create chemicals which binds your ear tissues together and when it heals, it will naturally close up. If it had no infection, it would take years to close up or just never close up. It would be best to use what your doctor gave you and clean your ear wound whenever you can with warm salty water. But once it heals, it should close up.
