The Bill of Rights, as these amendments were known, were specific guarantees to the individual citizens of certain conditions. They addressed common concerns of the day. They are better understood when contrasted with the issues and concerns which caused them to be added then. 1) Freedom of Speech. Intended to allow a citizen to speak up about grievances with the government. Before this, loyalty was expected of the colonialists to the King. Criticism or addressing grievances could lead to punishment, when all the petitioner may have been trying to do was straighten out a problem so that they could go back to their duties. This is because that kind of speaking up was considered disloyal to the King. 2) Militia, Bear Arms. Necessary for constant self defense from colonialist from France or Spain or Indians, all of whom invaded English settlements. Idea may have been conceived after the Boston Massacre by the English soldiers. Defense by the Minutemen, may have showed the usefulness of such a militia. 3) Non-quartering. Colonists were forced to quarter, that is to feed and house, soldiers of the King. This guaranteed that the citizen would have a choice, and would not have to do this in the future unless the citizen wanted to. 4) Unreasonable search and seizure. Would only take place under probable cause. At the time a royal official could either search or seize property due to his position. False claims could be made, and then the property could be used for personal gain. This reduced this activity from happening at another person's whims. 5)Due process- Cannot be tried without a formal indictment. Person can also not be tried twice for the same crime. Also not to be forced to become a witness against himself. Attempted to eliminate false admissions under duress. 6) Trial By Jury and Rights of the Accused Guaranteed a uniformity in how trials were presented to allow the accused to present ant witness to could prove his or her innocence. 7) Civil trial by Jury-preserves the same rights as found in trials in which indictments have been handed down. Prevents the opportunity to use the courts to maliciously bankrupt someone. 8) Prohibition of excessive bail or cruel and /or unusual punishment. Attempted to reduce excessive pain or humiliation. People of the day were put in stocks while the populace threw things at them. Some were burned at the stake,especially in witch trials. Excessive bail could keep the accused in a debtor's prison such as they had then, and block his or her ability to fight the case effectively. Also, many jails and institutions of the day had squalid conditions. 9) The absence of a listed right does not make it deniable to the public. Blocks the legalistic argument that if it is not enumerated in the Constitution, that it is not granted as a right. There were those who believed in strict interpretation of the Constitution, and this would prevent this group from using this to deny rights to anyone. 10) Powers of States. Those rights not delegated to the federal government shall be vested in the states. This was put in to win ratification of nearly self sufficient, financially solvent states that had achieved some semblance of self rule by having an organized state government. This allowed these state governments to continue independently, and soothed those who believed in states' rights.

The Ten Amendments was basically a compromise by the supporters of the Constitution to get non-supporters to ratify it. Many were really opposed to the Constitution because it did not guarantee basic rights, such as freedom of speech and religion. However, federalists (supporters of the Constitution) said that they would make a Bill of Rights (the first 10 Amendments) if the Constitution is ratified. That is the reason the Constitution was ratified, because many delegates to state conventions were not sure about not having a Bill of Rights. They were afraid that the country might turn out to be something like Britain, with an absolute ruler. With narrow margins did the Constitution pass in states like New York and Virginia, but with the Bill of Rights going to be added, it perhaps added somewhat to the vote.

Only because you have Fany in your Avatar. 1- freedom of speech, religion and press - Ex. Strikes, etc. 2- right for guns - Ex. To have and own guns for protection. 3- people don't house soldiers - Ex. As it says. 4- prevents unreasonable searches - Ex. Police don't search for no reason. 5- can't punish someone unless without reason behind a law - Ex. As it says. Tickets that falsely blames you. 6- right to a quick and speedy trial - Ex. as it says. 7- jury decides cases - Ex. Jury decides the cases. 8- can have bail and bans cruel or unusual punishments - Ex. Ban cruel punishments like beating up someone for no reason. 9- more rights than just the constitution - Ex. More rights then the usual constitution. 10- states have powers that the government doesn't - Ex. make the states more regulatory.

I don't know much about this sort of stuff, but I'd suggest talking to it to your doctor for one... this is a big step and it needs to be done... her starting school unable to hear will probably be detrimental to her ability to learn... so I'd recommend against it... But.. my first thought... how about making it a fun thing for her? Maybe make a big construction paper chart and get some shiny stickers and basically... through out the day call her over, or go check on her, and ask her where her hearing aids are. If they're in her ears where they belong, she gets a star, and if she gets so many stars, she gets a reward. (maybe a piece of candy for 2 or 3 stars or something like that -- or maybe one per star, with a reward at the end of the day depending on how many stars she has or something like that.. I don't have a kid, so I don't know how best to reward a 3 year old... if the idea of 'saving' stars up will work, or if instant reward is better!) ... the idea being to 'train' her to keep them in, and know where they are, and associate them with being a good thing... :D
