Question: Recently, I learned the biblical commandment "thou shalt not kill" is a mistranslation that should say "thou shalt not murder." That distinction was being made to explain why killing people in the midst of war is not a sinful act, since the law does not define it as "murder." But people who base their pro-life stance on their Christian beliefs also say abortion is murder, a characterization contradicting that same criminal law. How can the religious right be so willing to accept the letter of the law when it excludes deaths of innocent people during wartime, but they will fight against the same definition when it comes to the legality of abortion? Mike C, you're forgetting about all the innocent people who die during the fog of war. Smart bombs aren't as smart as you think they are. ...When innocent people die in a war, it's written off as "collateral damage." Is that what you mean by "justified"?

Oh, I just love it when the pro-lifers start talking about how it's murder because "a living being doesn't even get a chance at life." People, are your brains even ON? If that were a valid objection, you men would be committing murder every time a sperm escapes your body without fertilizing an egg (which means masturbation, birth control, wet dreams, and having sex with your wife at the wrong time of the month are all murder), and you women are committing murder every single month when you menstruate. If fetal cells qualify as "life", then so do gamete cells, geniuses. So I hope all you murderers are happy with yourselves. Moreover, assuming for the moment that by "living beings" you don't only mean humans (which is certainly not the case, as you don't usually see all these abortion-protesting nuts also campaigning for animal rights and living vegan lifestyles, but we'll have fun with the concept anyway), you are also committing murder every time you: eat meat or eggs, kill a spider, wash your hands... actually, for that matter, plants are living things, too, and the world is full of all kinds of other living things that nobody gives a damn about, so you'd better rectify that situation as well, and just stop eating and doing things altogether. Get the point? The question is NOT "When does life begin?". The question is, "Do we have the right to tell other people what do with their bodies?". And make no mistake, a fetus is a part of the mother's body. Until its nervous system is functional and it can survive outside the womb on it's own, it is not a separate person, and terminating the pregnancy (regardless of whether you feel the woman's motives for doing so are justified or not) is NOT murder. Are there better options for dealing with an unwanted pregnancy than abortion? Yeah, in my opinion, most of the time there are. But I can only make that decision for myself. I don't have the right to tell anyone else what they can or can't do, and neither do you. No one is forcing you to have an abortion. So stop trying to force other people to do things your way.

No civilized society in history thought that abortion is not murder, begining with Hipocrates, the founder of medical ethics 2000 years ago, who swore not to give abortions. His oath was repeated by doctors throughout the centuries, but we aparently know better because its beeen done already without the sky falling on our heads for nearly 30 years. Not very wise, because if history judges it to be murder then we will look back and be ashamed. Just like we are better judges of every war in history when we are looking back . Of course some wars are done in self-defense, others are not, but abortion is done for personal peace of mind, out of ignorance, out of a forced argument that a fetus is not human. Of course who can understnd the incredible mercy of God, who welcomes back the souls of these creations to heaven, and understands that the mother is a victim too, who still has a little son or daughter waiting to be reunited to her in heaven. It is not very much talked about how abortion affects the mother: usually five to ten years afterwards manifesting as a hatred for men, general hostility, a sense of failure each time a new family member is born to a relative. Is that how we were meant to live? This is described as post-abortion sindrome, although not universally recognized. Still, according to studies the suicide rate is six times higher for mothers who chose abortion vs mothers who had children.

The religious right want to subjugate women by making us feel guilty about our bodies. First, a history lesson: Before the Agricultural Revolution, mortality rates were much, much higher than they are today, to the point where if you weren't "doing it" pretty much constantly then the population would decline. Between the Ag. Rev. and the 1st Ind. Rev., mortality rates fell, and with the discoveries made since the 1st Ind. Rev. they plummeted; until nowadays, in the West at least, anyone being born is almost certain to live to see their great-grandchildren grow up. However, our bodies have not adapted as quickly as the circumstances. We still feel the urge to reproduce at caveman rates. This is slowly changing, precisely because individuals with very low sex drives can nonetheless reproduce successfully nowadays, but most people still get sexual urges. Until the overall sex drive of the population as a whole is lowered (which should happen, given enough time), it is necessary to use artificial techniques to ensure that one s#@g does not equal one baby.

It isn't just Christians who define abortion as murder. Even when I was a pagan, I viewed abortion as completely wrong. Why? Because that "fetus" has a heartbeat, his or her own DNA, his or her own blood type, and his or her sex is already determined, all by the time a woman knows she's pregnant. Therefore, it is alive. Ending a life like that is murder. Biologically, that's the only way to look at it. As soon as I finished taking a course on human development, I was against abortion. This does not mean, however, that I want it illegalized. I would rather people just start being smarter about having sex.

their is nothing moral about their attacks on anyone that dares believe differently to themselves! Research shows that the reason humans struggle with emotion to find equitable solutions is pinpointed the region of the brain called the insular cortex, or insula, which is also the seat of emotional reactions. The fact that the brain has such a robust response to unfairness shows that sensing unfairness is a basic evolved capacity. The emotional response to unfairness pushes people from extreme inequity and drives them to be fair. This observation shows our basic impulse to be fair isn't a complicated thing that we learn. It therefore fully illustrates that all humans have morals controlled by the brain and that Christians are entirely wrong to try and claim morals as their own!!!! But Christians found a way round it! Government statistics show that Christians are vastly over represented in prisons for sexual, violent and fraudulent crime whilst year on year government figures show atheists make up only 2% of the prison population! The Catholic Church is paying millions in compensation for the sex/paedophile crimes of their priests alone! Christians are vastly over represented in the divorce courts! Christians invented the concept of sin and then the idea that you could sin, ask forgiveness, get pardoned and start with a clean sheet! So no surprise that they are so expert at it is it‽ A Christian is a man that feels repentance on Sunday for what he did on Saturday and is going to do on Monday. - Thomas Russell Ybarra
