Question: My husband entered the US illegally several years ago. We have already started legal steps for him to become legal although he is not at this time. He has to return home (very soon, like in less than a mth) for an undetermined amount of time to return legally. I have always been interested in border protection and in keeping my country safe. I met him and its like it was not even important that he was "illegal." I know whats right and wrong therefore we decided a while ago to "do it the right way". My question is: I recently applied to become a border patrol agent and one of the questions on the application was: Are you married or living with someone that illegally entered the country? Obvioulsy, I had to put YES. I wont lie. So, back to the question: is it possible for me to become a border patrol agent even though I married someone that entered the US illegally? Even though he is leaving within the next few weeks to return home to become legal. I understand everyones thoughts on this topic. I dont know that I would even be a good candidate for border patrol after this. I do know its illegal for people to come into the country 'illegal'. I would not allow anyone to do so, he entered years before I even knew him. Plus, does God say that he or she is illegal? NO! I would although do my job to the fullest even though I have totally different aspects of the situation. Also, I saw in one comment that I could be charged with aiding and abeding an illegal. Umm, No I can not. We have already been through many, many legal hearings and I think that if I was going to be charged with anything that it would be done already. NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL! They may be in an illegal country but NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL!!

You on the one hand say you have always been interested in border protection and keeping our country safe, yet you marry an illegal. How can you say you know what is right and what is wrong, but marry someone you know is doing something illegal? Can you see how this would look to someone going over your application? If you do, by some miracle, become a border patrol agent it would answer a lot of questions about how so many illegals slip into this country undetected.

If your husband entered the US without inspection (EWI) he's guilty of a crime, literally, and there's no way to adjust status from within the US. Once he leaves, he will trigger a (most likely) 10-year ban which can be overcome with an I-601 waiver that is as easy to get as uranium in the liquor store. In short: no way. You did the right thing in telling the truth, but I would be very surprised if this wasn't a dealbreaker for the employment of a border agent.

NO. Right now you are breaking the law by aiding and abetting an illegal alien. We need Border Patrol agents who will do their job and keep these types of illegals from entering.

More than likely no. It is considered a conflict of interests and they try not to hire agents that have ties to illegal immigrants.

I don't think so. You are breaking the law that you will be sworn to uphold. No double standards are permitted. In fact, if someone wanted to, they could charge you with aiding and abetting a criminal against the U.S.A. with jail time and a stiff fine. I don't want you protecting our borders.

It could be a conflict of interest issue that may prevent the agency from considering you unless there is a chance that you could perhaps explain your situation in detail.

Well, CAN you tell the difference effectively and are you sure they are KNOWINGLY hiring illegals? I had problems when I came to the US finding work because most people don't even know what a work visa looks like. So I joined the army, who sponsored my citizenship, sparing me many thousands of dollars. So DO be sure or you'll just lose your own job for having your entire operation disrupted for an entire day while ICE digs around your paperwork. However IF you are ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN they are willfully and knowingly hiring illegals, call ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They are in your local phone book under "government".
