Question: Effective managers need technical, human, and conceptual skills. Do all managers need these in the same mix? In other words, would some managers need more of one than of another? Why? Describe the managerial skills you think you need to develop to be an effective manager, and suggest how this might be done.

As an experienced manager I will provide the following advice. Keep in mind its a shark-eat-shark world out there and with the internet technology and easing in restrictions to get visa's, you are literally competing with the world. Formost in skills is dealing effectively with people as individuals and using group dynamics to build effective teams. In order to do this you need to know how to communicate and apply empathy. 99% of my problems are resolved through effective communication and group dynamics. Years ago I was having employee problems and spent endless hours with the Union and EEO officials. The old saying that one learns from experience is very true. Although I had college and thought I was ready, I really wasen't. When I have issues or problems with employees, I call the entire team together, explain the situation, outline the non-negotiables and have the entire team solve the problem and provide me the recommendation. 99.9% of the time I concur with their recommendations. Now the individual I had issues with has to live up to the team expectations. It really works and I havent had any problems in over 10 years. You also need to know your business. By knowing your business also means knowing where to get the right answers about the things you don't know in a very short period of time. What managerial tools you need depends on the business you are in and the people you work with, for, and those that work for you. It also depends on your clients/customers. The most power a manager can ever achieve is the willingness of his or her team to do the very best they can possibly do because they really want to. i agree with answer one and two -- but i will add this if you are a real effectived manager -- not a line boss -- you do not require any technical skill to run an organization.
