Question: I had a 2g iPhone and my friend gave me her 3G iphone when she upgraded to the newer 3GS. I just put my sim card from the 2G into the 3G phone. I kept the 3G disabled because I knew the 3G service costs more and I never once used it. Plus I usually have access to WiFi, so the 3G service really wouldn't be worth it to me. Recently I've been getting both Text Messages and Emails from AT&T stating "Your data plan is ineligible for iPhone 3G. To prevent excess charges and enable Visual Voicemail, contact your telecom manager or AT&T" I have been doing some research on the internet and found a blog that discussed this topic - apparently I'm not the only one out there that has been getting these scare messages. The blog started in 2008 and no one confirmed that AT&T has added the extra charges or turned off their service. Has anyone else been getting these scare messages from AT&T? Did they ever do anything to add the 3G data plan or disable your service until you paid the extra amount? (Please only answer if you HAVE experienced this... I appreciate your opinions and all, but I'm looking for facts)

Whenever you begin using a phone you have two options: either let AT&T know you are using it (through stores, customer service, etc), or wait and have the system pick up that you are using it. Every few weeks the system sweeps accounts to see what kind of phones customers are using and if it needs to fix any provisions, it does that. Having said that, you have been using the 3G iphone which must have the unlimited data plan attached since the iPhone is always connected to the data network. Your 3G is turned off but you are still running off of the EDGE network and GSM network that connects to the internet. Because you are using the iPhone with a data plan not compatible with the 3G, the system will automatically provision your account for the $30 data plan. The iPhone 3G uses the 3G network which is much faster than the old 2G network that the iPhone 2G uses.

When I switched from a Samsung Blackjack to the 3G iPhone, my data plan didn't change because I switched to an iPhone. They price is the same. As is texting. Since AT&T's swervice for a 3G Requires a data plan once they find out you are using a 3G they will start billing you accordingly,.

The only way to keep unlimited data with Verizon at present time is to buy the new phone at full price. If you want the phone cheaper up front, you will lose the unlimited data plan.

I think your fine using your moms upgrade. It's done quite a bit.. I recently double checked with Verizon and they said yes it can be done and not loose your unlimited data.... Good luck
