The Lisbon Family was always seen as a loving, joyous, and cheerful type of family, however, the parents were also very strict with their daughters. One bright, sunny summer the Lisbon’s house appeared to be darker than usual, the reason behind that was because Cecilia, their youngest daughter, tried to commit suicide, but failed to achieve it by cutting her wrist. Before Cecilia was found lying in the bathtub full of blood, Sofia Coppola, the director of the film who used lighting as a rhetorical device, especially darkness to capture her audience’s attention. Darkness is seen all through the film, The Virgin Suicides, to foreshadow that an unpleasant event will soon occur, which in this case is death. We encounter this repetitive rhetorical device usage throughout the whole film, which is mostly seen before an unpleasant event will occur for example when the Lisbon sister’s are about to commit suicide. So later on during the film it is seen that her parents threw a chaperoned party for Cecilia to try to make her feel better. The party was held in their basement, which was dark and the only lighting there was was the lamps that they had down stairs. The lamps they had where not as bright as one imagines. They were dimmed and yellow. It made the basement seem a little scary looking. While the party was still going on, Cecilia excused herself from it and went upstairs. After going upstairs, the mother heard a loud and scary noise and went upstairs only to see her daughter dead. Cecilia finally succeeded in taking her life away by jumping out of the window and landing in a metal fence they had in their yard. Darkness was again used in the basement to foreshadow something horrible, which was Cecilia’s death. Natural darkness is when the night is coming to an end, as well as the shadows of the trees.
